BMLMHC and the Men of Color Health Awareness Project,
Inc. (MOCHA) together collaborated to facilitate NBAAID events in
the Rochester area for the very first time during 2003, then again
in 2004. The 2003 event included a press conference at Rochester's
historic Liberty Pole. On this day, at this frigid outdoor
event, BMLMHC ‘s Board President -- J. Roberto Burgos
-- publicly announced he was taking the HIV antibody test
and encouraged other local legislature to test as well. During the event, Rev. Dr. Richard Douglass
-- Pastor of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church -- led a
prayer vigil and was supported by several representatives from local
HIV service provider
agencies.
In 2003, J. Roberto Burgos led the
way for being tested and was one of ten taking the HIV antibody test
on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
To mark NBHAAD 2004 events, BMLMHC and MOCHA Project,
Inc. held a joint press conference announcing the roll out of
the 'Get it Done Initiative' at
Cutmasters Barbershop. HIV Counseling & Testing was also offered
at MOCHA Project's Franklin Street location. AIDS
Rochester, Inc., Anthony Jordan, McCree
McCuller Wellness Center, and New York State Department of Health
joined in this effort resulting in 42 individuals taking the
HIV antibody test. The 2004 event was featured in the Community Advisory Board
Newsletter for the international HIV Vaccine Trials Network
(March-April , 2004)..
