JACKIE'S CALL TO WOMEN OF COLOR
SOCIAL GATHERING

On August 19, 2006 Jackie's 'first' Call to Women of Color Social Gathering provided a 'safe space'
for 65 African American women who were pampered
and informed about HIV prevention, testing, research and risk factors in a social setting.

PURPOSE: To raise HIV awareness among Women of Color who do not consider themselves at high risk of contracting HIV or sexually transmitted diseases.

GOAL: To create a safe space (social network) for Women of Color from different socio-economic backgrounds to address issues that affect overall health and develop skills and foster attitudes necessary for Women of Color to feel empowered to say 'no'.

STATISTICS: According to the Monroe County Health Department (2005), 52% of women newly diagnosed with HIV were African American, 33% were White, and there were no new cases among Hispanic women. While there are programs geared to educating and helping Women of Color who are or who have been in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, or who know they participate in high risk behaviors, there are few programs for Women of Color who simply feel they are immune to HIV/AIDS.
