In January of 2004,
BMLMHC in collaboration with the Men of Color Health Awareness
Project, Inc. (MOCHA) was awarded a grant from the
Hoffman-LaRoche pharmaceutical company to pilot a community based
program that provided for HIV prevention intervention inclusive of
HIV vaccine research awareness. The program was called The
Get It Done Initiative and utilizes African American and Latino
barbers and hair dressers as key opinion leaders to deliver good
health and disease risk-reduction messages to their patrons.
In its first year, this program reached over 300
individuals by the way of workshops and one-on-one training
sessions. To date, there are eleven Get It Done shops located
throughout the City of Rochester NY. During September of 2004 a
series of grants were awarded to expand the Get It Done
Initiative. Funders included the HSDHHS-Office of Minority
Health, the National Institutes of Health, the Monroe Plan of
Rochester and the AIDS Institute at the New York State Department of
Health.
In addition to HIV testing, Hepatitis
A&B vaccinations are offered to the community every third
Tuesday of each month from 4PM-6PM in our home office at 107 Liberty
Pole Way. The Get It Done shops also provide their clients
with access to HIV testing, HIV prevention, and HIV vaccine research
information.
The Get It Done Initiative was recognized in the
Kaiser Family News Foundation online news services for its unique
and caring approach for improving access to health care information
by African American and Latino men and women. In the first 18
months of Get It Done over 7,000 individuals have been reached
through HIV/STD individual, group, and outreach
activities.
